Family Support Program

The Family Support Program (FSP) offers counseling for children and adolescents who have been sexually or physically abused or who have been exposed to family violence. Our clinicians have been trained to use treatment methods that have been effective in treating and reducing trauma and improving daily living. We offer outpatient treatment with counseling at The Center for Family Safety and Healing and treatment in family homes.

Caregivers are often worried about protecting their child from further harm after their child has disclosed sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect. Caregivers may question if counseling would do more harm than good in their child’s situation. The questions below address some concerns and explain why counseling is believed to be a critical piece in the child’s healing process.

Upon completion of a clinical assessment process, the following treatment models are used by our clinicians:

Exposure to Family Violence Treatment Group

This is an eight-week group therapy program for children and adolescents who have been exposed to family violence, and their caregivers. Treatment groups are offered for children and adolescents ages 3-18. For every child and adolescent group, we offer a group designed for caregivers that meets at the same time. The treatment groups help children and adolescents to express feelings, decrease isolation, learn about safety planning and healthy relationships, and provide support and education to the participating caregivers.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

This intervention is used to treat symptoms, such as anxiety, depression and trauma reactions. EMDR has been shown to speed up the healing process without using traditional talk therapy methods. Therapists are trained and certified in the use of EMDR and have practical experience in providing this intervention to families.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy

This evidence-based model focuses on coaching parents to produce desired behaviors in their children through play. It relies on praising and attending to the child, as well as disciplining the child. It is particularly effective in working with children with disruptive behavior problems and with abused parents and their children who have witnessed the family violence and for reducing symptoms related to childhood trauma.

Psychiatric Assessment and Treatment

This on-site clinical service is available for children and adolescents who may need medication management to help them work through their reactions to the abuse. It is only available to individuals who receive their counseling services through FSP.

Psychological Evaluation

We offer comprehensive and standardized psychological evaluations for children and adolescents who are receiving counseling services with FSP. Evaluations may be conducted when there are unanswered questions about the child’s learning ability, emotional functioning or behaviors that need to be answered in order to provide the best intervention.

Sexual Abuse Treatment Group

This is a 10-week group therapy program for child victims of sexual abuse and their nonoffending caregivers. Treatment groups are offered for children and adolescents ages 3-18. For every child and adolescent group, we offer a group for their caregiver that meets at the same time. Our group treatment provides psycho-education on symptoms or behaviors related to sexual abuse, as well as healthy coping skills. From treatment, families decrease isolation, increase their support system, gain a better understanding of healthy sexuality and learn safety skills.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

This treatment model works with children who have experienced a trauma and involves participation with their nonoffending caregivers. Through TF-CBT, children and families learn to understand their experiences. They discover how to manage anxieties and fears, cope with stress, improve self-esteem and develop strategies to maintain safety in their environments. They also acquire the skills to form healthy relationships with others, how to heal from the hurt.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
(TF-CBT/DBT)

For adolescents who present with complex trauma and histories of multiple psychiatric hospitalizations and/or chronic harm to self or others, we offer a blended model of TF-CBT/DBT. Participation of adolescents and their nonoffending caregivers is mandatory for this intervention, which combines group, individual and family therapies.
